Bringing equity to the airwaves one member at a time
The Women’s Radio Collective formed in January of 2009 at CJAM 99.1 FM. Our mandate is to attract, train and retain female volunteers to create gender equity in campus-community radio. We offer opportunities for women to learn and develop broadcasting skills to produce their own alternative media. The collective fosters female empowerment on and off the airwaves, and encourages members to assert their feminist perspectives.
The Bonde Do Role track we played on today's show was one of our favorites, so do yourself a favor and check them out! Really great/catchy female-fronted Brazilian music!! Recommended if you like the sounds of M.I.A. or Santogold.

"Because of the strength of Bob Dylan's songs, especially in his presentation of them, it is sometimes quite difficult to resist imitating him. But something did not allow me to become a reflection. I believe it's known as the 'ego'. Thus when Mr. Dylan's songs and I got to working together, I made some lovely discoveries; one being Dylan's own turn with the melody, whether his own or adapted. Another discovery - the young 'old' man; i.e. the wonder of how young Dylan can reduce to words such powerfully emotional content which comes out of wisdom usually attributed to a long span in time and living experience.... It has been a happy association for me; I wish the same for you. Go well Stay well Odetta "

Members of the Women's Radio Collective are responsible for generating content for two different prime time programs in CJAM's broadcast schedule, which are hosted by a rotating cast of volunteers. Non-members are welcome to contribute to our radio programs too - all you need is supervision from an official WRC member, which we'll provide for free.
Milk and Vodka - Monday's 5 to 6 PM A free-form music program, with emphasis on female artists and disc jockeys operating the controls. Previous program features include a look at the founding women of hip-hop, ladies of jazz, a retrospectice of British punk band The Slits, and much more. Theme-based shows are encouraged, by anything music related can be presented for our listeners.
Genesis - Wednesday's 8:30 to 9 PM A spoken word program dedicated to dissecting the world of pop culture or anything news worthy. Previous program topics include menstruation as taboo, body hair, the "c" word and more. Topic driven shows, panel discussion, and interviews of any kind are accepted.
Additionally, the WRC maintains this blog regularily, promotes women's based event in the community and local female musicians and performers. We foster partnerships with other area non-profits and create special programming on CJAM each year for International Women's Day (March 8).
Want to join?
The Women’s Radio Collective holds meetings each month to meet with new members, schedule training and brainstorm new story ideas. No previous radio experience is required and it’s FREE to join.
Being a part of the collective is an excellent way to contribute to the Windsor-Detroit community without a huge time investment; you’ll get volunteer experience that looks great on any resume, expand your knowledge of sociopolitical issues and underground music, and connect with other like-minded ladies to design media that challenges misconceptions and stereotypes about women.
Come on by CJAM's offices and introduce yourself! We're located in the basement of the C.A.W. Student Center on the University of Windsor campus (around the corner from the Pharmacy). Or, if e-mail is more your thing contact our Women's Radio Collective Coordinator, Cassandra Caverhill, at progcjam@uwindsor.ca to be included in our next orientation session!
