Bringing equity to the airwaves one member at a time

The Women’s Radio Collective formed in January of 2009 at CJAM 99.1 FM. Our mandate is to attract, train and retain female volunteers to create gender equity in campus-community radio. We offer opportunities for women to learn and develop broadcasting skills to produce their own alternative media. The collective fosters female empowerment on and off the airwaves, and encourages members to assert their feminist perspectives.

Genesis for July 29th, 2009

Join your hosts this week, Hilda Coker and Cassandra Caverhill, as they dissect the following topics starting at 8:30 PM on Wednesday July 29:

* The great trouser debate*
Learn about how police in Seoul, North Korea and Khartoum, Sudan are enforcing that women are only permitted to wear skirts, as they both attempt to clamp down on public morals.

*Violence towards women in the name of family honour*
On June 30, a car filled with four women was found submerged in the Rideau Canal near Kingston, Ontario (three were sisters, one was a relative). Police have been treating the deaths as suspicious, and are now pursuing allegations that the murders were carried out as "honour killings". Are the cultural compents of this crime a growing trend in Canada?

*Finally! A beauty pageant about what's on the inside*
A teenager recently beat out nearly 300 other contestants and was recently crowned "Queen of Beautiful Morals" last week in a beauty competition held in Saudi Arabia. Is this shift towards recognizing women for who they are instead of what they look like a welcome change in the world of feminism?

*Playing hardball*
Last week ESPN reporter Erin Andrews had a video surface of her on the Internet naked in a hotel room, unbenownst to her. Is Andrews the victim of a crime perpetrated by a peeping Tom, or is this news - which was released by ESPN before any other outlet - a way to generate higher ratings? We'll talk about sexism in the sports world.

Listen in live at 91.5 FM, or online at www.cjam.ca! As always, we welcome your comments regarding this week's topics here on the blog!

Genesis for July 22nd, 2009

Tune into CJAM-FM tonight for a special episode of Making Contact starting at 8:30 PM. We'll be listening to a program called "The Intimate Ecology of Motherhood". Here's the description, taken from Making Contact's website.

"Ecologist, author, and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber is an internationally recognized expert on the environmental links to reproductive health. Her book, Living Downstream, presents cancer as a human rights issue; her latest book, Having Faith, explores the intimate ecology of motherhood.

On this Women's Desk edition of Making Contact, we'll hear Steingraber's speech at the Women's Environmental Health and Justice Bay Area Summit in San Francisco in October of 2003."

This is a facinating and eye-opening episode about breastfeeding and the health of women and their children. If you can't tune in live, be sure to download it via CJAM's online archives.

Check out awesome Phog Phest pictures from Cristina, a regular contributor to the WRC!

Phog Phest took place on Saturday July 11 in downtown Windsor and Cristina Naccarato was on site snapping lots of great pics from the event.
