Dating and feminism

Tonight on Genesis we talked about some articles from different feminist blogs about dating, online and otherwise, and how feminism may play into that.

We discussed Andrew Tweten's Feminist Craigslist Dating Experiment, both the good and the trolls.

as well as Amanda Hess' article "Fucking While Feminist, With Jaclyn Friedman"

We talked about how these women experienced many different reactions to their online dating profiles and how they negotiate the dating online while feminist.

We also talked about dating books, and cited Heather Wood Rudúlph's article "Can Dating Books Be Feminist?" in our discussion of how many dating books merely prescribe sticking to awkward and restrictive gender norms that have been around for hundreds of years as opposed to people being themselves and dating who they want to date in a healthier fashion.

We also referenced the book from 1904, Vivilore: The pathway to mental and physical perfection, the twentieth century book for every woman by Mary R. Melendy.

This exploration seemed to lead to the very simple conclusion that listening to other people about how you should run your relationships is probably not going to work. It is best to just be who you actually are, and you will eventually have a positive result.

Women and Videogames

Tune in tonight at 8:30 PM for a special edition of Genesis. We're going to be discussing women and videogames - women as characters, players and consumers. We've assembled a panel to tackle the issues and here's their info:

Aveline Barkhouse has been gamine on and off since the age of 12. Her console of choice is X-Box and her most recent achievement was killing her first Hunter in Halo, though her dad told her it was impossible.

Ashley Holman has been gaming for 3 years, and was inspired to play by her boyfriend. Her favourite type of games are adventure such as the God of War series, Heavenly Sword, Assassins' Creed, and Afro Samurai. X-box is her system of choice but she also uses PS3.

Dana LaPorte, is the co-host and co-creator of ezmodeunlocked.com and the EZ-Mode Unlocked Podcast. She’s been gaming since the age of 5, and uses all consoles, X-Box, Wii, PlayStation, etc. Dana’s biggest gaming achievement is ezmodeunlocked.com and the amazing community surrounding it.

Victoria Rose has been gaming for as long as she can remember and tends to do most playing on PC at this time. Her current pick is Team Fortress 2 and she’s eagerly awaiting Guild Wars 2's launch next year. Her most recent gaming achievement is completing everything in The New Super Mario Bros. Wii with a few friends.

This show was inspired by a Facebook group called "A Girl's Version of X-Box". If you read the comments you'll notice not only is sexism being promoted by men in the group, but women as well.

During the program we'll be talking about a number of links and stories in the media, which we've included below:

- Frag Dolls
Frag Dolls are a team of gamers recruited by a company called Ubisoft in 2004. These women work to promote the company's line of games but also strive to increase the presence of females in the gaming industry.

- GameCrush
GameCrush is a company that is aiming to link male gamers with female "play dates". Interested males can play games face-to-face with female gamers - who at the end of sessions are rated for their gaming skills, "hotness" and "flirtatiousness" - for a fee of about $9 per game.

- RapeLay
A game which allows players to stalk and assault multiple women and girls. The feminist site Jezebel has an article of interest here.

Do you have an old prom or semi-formal dress gathering dust in your closet? Why not donate it to a great cause! Building Community Partnerships and Family 2 Family are currently accepting formal wear for children in the Michigan foster care system.

As we all know, prom can be very expensive and many youth in foster care cannot afford the costs associated with this special night. You can help by donating your old prom dress, men's suit, jewelery, purse or dress shoes. Cash donations will also be accepted.

I personally donated a dress that I wore to my graduation a few years back; I encourage all members of the Women's Radio Collective and our listeners to comb through their closets when spring cleaning! Donations can be dropped off at CJAM during regular business hours, 10 AM to 5 PM from Monday to Friday.

The play is a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end a war. Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace.

World AIDS day
Click here for more information on HIV AIDS. Just as a clarification, when we spoke about HIV transferring through all bodily fluids, we were speaking in reference to fluids exchanged during sexual activity, either male or female, as well as bloood. HIV is not spread through saliva.

We also talked about the December 6th Memorial, happening this coming Sunday at the CAW Centre on the University of Windsor Campus at 4pm. The screening of the film Polytechnique will happen Friday, December 4th at MacDonald Hall on the University of Windsor campus. Please come out and support these events and help stop violence against women.

We also chatted about Windsor proposing controversial legislation to regulate "body rub" parlours in the city. City officials have proposed opening and closing times that parlour proprietors say will drastically cut their business. However, they support legislation that regulates and legitimizes their businesses. Other contested parts of the proposed rules involve whether or not security cameras will be allowed in the rooms for the protection of workers, and whether or not clients and workers will be allowed to be completely naked. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. For more information, check out the article from the Windsor Star.

Finally, we talked briefly about the former Miss Argentina, Solange Magnano, who died after complications from plastic surgery and how this speaks to the oppressive beauty standards that women face. More on that story here:

"Because of the strength of Bob Dylan's songs, especially in his presentation of them, it is sometimes quite difficult to resist imitating him. But something did not allow me to become a reflection. I believe it's known as the 'ego'. Thus when Mr. Dylan's songs and I got to working together, I made some lovely discoveries; one being Dylan's own turn with the melody, whether his own or adapted. Another discovery - the young 'old' man; i.e. the wonder of how young Dylan can reduce to words such powerfully emotional content which comes out of wisdom usually attributed to a long span in time and living experience.... Last week ESPN reporter Erin Andrews had a video surface of her on the Internet naked in a hotel room, unbenownst to her. Is Andrews the victim of a crime perpetrated by a peeping Tom, or is this news - which was released by ESPN before any other outlet - a way to generate higher ratings? We'll talk about sexism in the sports world.

Collective Activity Update and Milk&Vodka for May 25th

Members of the CJAM Women's Collective participated in the Walk for a Creative City that occured at the Windsor riverfront on Monday May 18th. We were happy to support endeavour to promote local creative representation and proudly stand for the arts as important to the Windsor community in various ways! Tom Lucier of Phog Lounge pepped up all that came to participate while simultaneously Windsor's birthday was being celebrated also alongside strikers. Post-International Women's Day Programming

Today at CJAM, the Women's Radio Collective is broadcasting a whole afternoon of special programming until 6pm as organized by Collective head Hilda Coker who is also personally contributing. Beginning at noon with a half hour spoken-word slot, Nicole Markham and Rachel Pipitone will be examining "What is Feminism"?

I see feminism as the means by which we can combat patriarchy. Patriarchy rules the world, but the reality of patriarchy is that it doesn't serve anyone. It doesn't serve women and it doesn't serve men. I think that the male sensibility can be unstable on its own without the counterbalancing of feminine sensibility, [and] I see feminism as an alternative to that. We're not talking about matriarchy, we're talking about a dynamic interplay between the sexes that informs all levels of society and is truly the answer to things like war"

Genesis Does Burlesque

I was going write a well thought out SECOND post on Burlesque, because myself and Kate are hosting a special edition of Genesis tonight about the topic, but then I figured you should listen for yourself tonight, and THEN I'll post all the issues we discussed.

Burlesque is a form of theatrical entertainment involving parody and exaggeration. It's rooted within nineteenth century vaudeville theater and was later resurfaced in the early twentieth century as a blend of satire, performance arts and adult entertainment.

We're going to be looking more into the origins of the art, look at why it is NOT stripping, how it can be looked at as a feminist enterprise, and highlighting some of the contemporary burlesque dancers and how it has been adapted into our everyday culture!

Genesis February 11

Yesterday's episode of Genesis was hosted by Hilda Coker and Lama Alsafi.
The topics covered ranged from international to local and featured music from MIA!
They were:
*The attacks by Hindu groups on Indian women in bars.
*The new vaginal gel which could prevent the spread of AIDS.
*Michelle Obama being featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine- the second First Lady and one of few African Americans to be featured.
*CJAM in danger of losing its signal and how you can help. As promised on the show, the information about this is below.
*MIA performing 9 months pregnant at the grammy's on Sunday- seriously, the birth could have been part of the performance- that's how pregnant she was.

It was an interesting show and Hilda and I disagreed on some issues, but in the end- we agreed to disagree.

We need your help to save CJAM!

CJAM is currently applying for an amendment to our broadcasting undertaking to assume a new signal at 99.1 FM. While CJAM has been broadcasting at about 1000 watts for over 10 years, the station was never granted “Protected Status” from the CRTC, thanks to pressures from the FCC who were concerned with CJAM’s level of interference with adjacent American stations. Without “Protected Status”, CJAM faces the risk of losing its signal to other applicants. In fact, CJAM faced that very risk recently when the CBC decided to apply for 91.5 in the fall of 2008. The CBC ultimately withdrew its application, but CJAM still faces possible removal from the FM band thanks to a pending American application for our signal.

CJAM has identified a new signal – 99.1 FM - that could afford the station protected status and has moved forward with applications for this new signal to Industry Canada and the CRTC. The application currently before the CRTC is now open for public comment, and this is where we need you, our community of listeners, programmers and volunteers to make your voice heard. If you value CJAM and community radio in Windsor and Detroit, please express your support of our application.
Letters may be submitted electronically at the CRTC website , by fax at 819-994-0218, or by conventional mail to the following address: CRTC Ottawa Ontario K1A 0N2.

The best thing you can do is to support our current application for a new Canadian broadcast license located at 99.1FM:

On tonight's episode of Genesis we'll be hearing an episode of Making Contact's Women Rising series entitled "Rescuers of Wildlife" (2008). Women are gaining influence as leaders throughout the world, fighting for peace, justice and the environment and civil society. In this program we profile four animal rights activists:

• Alice Ng has worked with Wild Aid, founded Animal Balance in the Galapagos Islands and is now the executive director of Animals Asia Foundation.
• Romsamira Guillen is the executive director of Proyecto Titi, promoting the survival of the Cotton-top Tamarian Monkey and its habitat in Columbia.
• Lorena Aguilar is an executive with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, specializing in community and gender issues.
• Elena Bykova heads up Wildlife Conservation Network's Saiga Conservation Alliance to preserve the Saiga Antelope in Uzbekistan.

Hope all enjoyed the Jan. 28th edition of Genesis hosted by myself and also Rachel of the brand new CJAM Women's Radio Collective. If you missed it you can just download the show! Thanks very much again to Professor Nancy Gobatto from the Women's Studies department for contributing so many great ideas and comments in the interview which was broadcasted during the show. The interview or a link to it will be posted on this blog shortly. The quote about the rhythm method as being the only "non-sexist" form of birth control was taken from the book "A Cooperative Method of Natural Birth Control" by Margaret Nofziger. We discussed alot of issues including the origin of the word "menstruation" as well as the language used in advertising and society to describe or refer to the process. Also, we talked about the menstrual cup of which more info can be found in the post about this alternative menstrual product on a blog called No Soap For Sale. There was also an interesting article we used concerning advertising methods for menstrual products called "A Candid Look At Menstrual Products - Advertising and Public Relations". Rachel and I really enjoyed putting a feminist perspective on these issues into the spotlight and with luck we got everyone thinking!

So we had a great Slits show! The first month of the Women's Collective shows at CJAM have been a success. This week on Jan 19th, myself and Christina Naccorato hosted an hour long special on The Slits. Avant-garde, jungle, dub, post-punk, raw and unpolished females rocking out and sending a message while they're at it. THE SLITS HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY and you should take the time to listen! There will also be a future post on the upcoming Wednesday Jan. 28th installment of Genesis on the topic of and issues surrounding menstruation hosted by myself and Rachel Pipitone.
