Dating and feminism

Tonight on Genesis we talked about some articles from different feminist blogs about dating, online and otherwise, and how feminism may play into that.

We discussed Andrew Tweten's Feminist Craigslist Dating Experiment, both the good and the trolls.

as well as Amanda Hess' article "Fucking While Feminist, With Jaclyn Friedman"

We talked about how these women experienced many different reactions to their online dating profiles and how they negotiate the dating online while feminist.

We also talked about dating books, and cited Heather Wood Rudúlph's article "Can Dating Books Be Feminist?" in our discussion of how many dating books merely prescribe sticking to awkward and restrictive gender norms that have been around for hundreds of years as opposed to people being themselves and dating who they want to date in a healthier fashion.

We also referenced the book from 1904, Vivilore: The pathway to mental and physical perfection, the twentieth century book for every woman by Mary R. Melendy.

This exploration seemed to lead to the very simple conclusion that listening to other people about how you should run your relationships is probably not going to work. It is best to just be who you actually are, and you will eventually have a positive result.

Women and Videogames

Tune in tonight at 8:30 PM for a special edition of Genesis. We're going to be discussing women and videogames - women as characters, players and consumers. We've assembled a panel to tackle the issues and here's their info:

Aveline Barkhouse has been gamine on and off since the age of 12. Her console of choice is X-Box and her most recent achievement was killing her first Hunter in Halo, though her dad told her it was impossible.

Ashley Holman has been gaming for 3 years, and was inspired to play by her boyfriend. Her favourite type of games are adventure such as the God of War series, Heavenly Sword, Assassins' Creed, and Afro Samurai. X-box is her system of choice but she also uses PS3.

Dana LaPorte, is the co-host and co-creator of ezmodeunlocked.com and the EZ-Mode Unlocked Podcast. She’s been gaming since the age of 5, and uses all consoles, X-Box, Wii, PlayStation, etc. Dana’s biggest gaming achievement is ezmodeunlocked.com and the amazing community surrounding it.

Victoria Rose has been gaming for as long as she can remember and tends to do most playing on PC at this time. Her current pick is Team Fortress 2 and she’s eagerly awaiting Guild Wars 2's launch next year. Her most recent gaming achievement is completing everything in The New Super Mario Bros. Wii with a few friends.

This show was inspired by a Facebook group called "A Girl's Version of X-Box". If you read the comments you'll notice not only is sexism being promoted by men in the group, but women as well.

During the program we'll be talking about a number of links and stories in the media, which we've included below:

- Frag Dolls
Frag Dolls are a team of gamers recruited by a company called Ubisoft in 2004. These women work to promote the company's line of games but also strive to increase the presence of females in the gaming industry.

- GameCrush
GameCrush is a company that is aiming to link male gamers with female "play dates". Interested males can play games face-to-face with female gamers - who at the end of sessions are rated for their gaming skills, "hotness" and "flirtatiousness" - for a fee of about $9 per game.

- RapeLay
A game which allows players to stalk and assault multiple women and girls. The feminist site Jezebel has an article of interest here.

Have an old dress or suit kickin' around the house?

Do you have an old prom or semi-formal dress gathering dust in your closet? Why not donate it to a great cause! Building Community Partnerships and Family 2 Family are currently accepting formal wear for children in the Michigan foster care system.

As we all know, prom can be very expensive and many youth in foster care cannot afford the costs associated with this special night. You can help by donating your old prom dress, men's suit, jewelery, purse or dress shoes. Cash donations will also be accepted.

I personally donated a dress that I wore to my graduation a few years back; I encourage all members of the Women's Radio Collective and our listeners to comb through their closets when spring cleaning! Donations can be dropped off at CJAM during regular business hours, 10 AM to 5 PM from Monday to Friday.

The University Players closes out their 51st season with Lysistrata by Aristophanes, and you can win tickets to their performance by listening to CJAM!

The play is a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end a war. Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace.

Listen to Genesis, our Women’s Radio Collective’s spoken word program, on Wednesday March 17 starting at 8:30 PM. We’ll feature an excerpt of the play and give away two pairs of tickets for the closing performance on Sunday April 11 at 2 PM.
